If there was ever any doubt that I’m a whore for open mic time, this pretty much confirms it. Frankly, if someone offered me a five minute open mic spot on the dark side of the moon, right now, I’d be on eBay looking to buy a second-hand space suit. I should concentrate on London but the truth is, I love the adventure of new gigs and trying out new venues. Hence, the TomTom SatNav unit. It’s part of the drive towards a more professional approach. Patrick Monahan was phenomenal but I’ve found Del Strain a better role model. He’s good but there was also a very meticulous and thorough approach to his preparation that I greatly admired. I plan to try and emulate it.
After letting it stew for a while, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am unnecessarily complicating things. I should assemble all the jokes that I know, organise them into some sort of coherent structure and commit it to memory. I have about 18 gags that range from weak to very strong. If I organise my material so that the good stuff is evenly distributed amongst the set and build it around three ‘waves’, the situations like Taunton are less likely to happen. Keep working on new material but have a rock solid set that can keep you going for an opening 15 if I have to.
Picked up a gig in Brighton in late July. Top Banana have finally relented and given me a spot.
